A 56-year-old HIV positive senior lecturer of Kyambogo University defiled and infected a 16-year-old blind girl in his car while taking her home.
Dr. Eron Lawrence who holds a PhD from the University of Oslo in Norway was a respected soft spoken and cheerful person. A senior lecturer and Dean of Faculty of special needs and rehabilitation. He initiated and chaired the Institutional Disability Policy for Kyambogo university and he was also the Project Administrator for “All we see is possibility” at the same University.
With vast experience as a consultant in inclusive education, Dr. Eron Lawrence rose through various ranks at Kyambogo university.
The day was 10/12/2023, when Dr. Eron Lawrence returned from Nairobi-Kenya where he had travelled as a caretaker with four students including the 16-yearl-old girl with visual impairment. He then picked his car a Toyota wish that he had left at Entebbe Airport and gave a kind lift to the students. He first dropped two students from Gulu University at Namayiba Taxi Park, where they boarded buses and travelled back to Gulu in Northern Uganda.
He went on to drop the third student at North Hall, Kyambogo university and then remained in the car only with the victim, a girl with visual impairment who can only see at day time with glasses but cannot completely see at night.
It was discovered that while he drove with the victim from around 10:20 pm up to Namugongo Nsawo village in Kira Municipality, she felt thirsty and told him that she needed to drink water. He got out of the car and bought a bottle of water from a Super market along Ndagire road, in Nalya.
Quenching her thirst was immediately followed by loss of consciousness. Suddenly upon regaining consciousness, she reportedly felt pain around her private parts and realised she had been sexually assaulted inside the car.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga reported that the following morning, the victim’s maternal uncle drove her back to school in Mukono and she did not reveal what happened to her. Upon reaching school, she revealed the predicament to her Senior woman teacher, who then alerted the Head Teacher and the matter was reported to Mukono Police.
He added that the victim was immediately put on post-rape treatment.
Enanga then reported that, samples were then taken from the suspect’s car, a Toyota wish with registration number UBA 349Z for DNA test and they matched with the samples found on the body of the victim.
According to Enanga, the suspect absconded police bond on the 24.12.2024, and disappeared a day after his casefile was sanctioned on 13.12.2014 for aggravated defilement of the 16-year-old, living with disability when he is HIV positive and a person in Authority over the victim, C/s 129(3), 4(b), (c) and (d) of the Penal Code Acts. The victim was a beneficiary of the (All we see is possibility project).
He further added that the suspect’s three sureties viz; Lawrence Olobo, aged 48, Gertrude Adoch and Paul Among, aged 54, were tasked to produce him before the DPC at Jinja road police division.
The Directorate of CID in coordination with the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KPM) had been hunting for the suspect since last year and they even put a 10 million Ugandan shillings bounty on whoever could arrest him.
However, one Thursday night, he presented himself to the CID.
Nakawa chief magistrate, Christine Nantege finally remanded the suspect to Luzira Prison until July 17th 2024. She did not allow him to plead to the charges against him because they are capital in nature and can only be tried by High court.
