ADDICTION CRISIS GRIPS ZIMBABWE: A DESPERATE CALL FOR COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION AND SOCIETAL INTERVENTION

Author: Mabel Nokhuthula Piki,Chinhoyi ,Zimbabwe

summary

Zimbabwe is facing a growing crisis of drug and substance abuse, (MOHCC, 2024) that is ravaging communities, particularly among the youth, (UNICEF, 2023). Despite the increasing severity of the problem, highlighted by numerous conferences and campaigns, reliable national statistics remain elusive. The country's rehabilitation infrastructure is woefully inadequate, with only 9 functional centres and 4 public mental health hospitals, (C.Manzeke, 2023)struggling to cope with the overwhelming demand. As a result, many patients are turned away or sent to jail, exacerbating the issue. The crisis is fuelled by a complex web of factors, including poverty, unemployment, poor law enforcement, and the breakdown of the moral fabric of society. Urgent action is needed to address the root causes and establish a comprehensive, well-resourced rehabilitation system to save lives and secure the country's future.
