Summary
Fake news, defined as intentionally false or misleading information, has increased in the digital age, significantly influencing public perception. The Imane Khalif case highlights the dangerous intersection of fake news and prejudice, exposing how misinformation can distort public perception and harm individuals. When media vehicles and political pages spread (willingly or not) deceptive information about Khalif´s identity, it revealed underlying biases and the media´s role in perpetuating stereotypes. This misrepresentation fuelled a backslash rooted in sexism, xenophobia, and transphobia. It underscores how the lack of critical thinking and accountability can lead us through a dangerous path. Drawing on bell hooks´ media studies and intersectional feminism, this article explores the implications of this case, emphasizing the need for critical media literacy, equitable representation, and challenging both media practices and public perceptions.
