Across East Africa, every nation allows abortions under specific legal exceptions. However, the practical application of these exceptions is far from straightforward. Societal stigmas, administrative hurdles, and the criminalization of abortion contribute to a landscape where unsafe procedures are prevalent. The effects of policies like the Global Gag Rule and the Helms Amendment have cast a shadow over reproductive healthcare, stifling services and perpetuating misinformation. However, amidst these challenges, a burgeoning movement of grassroots activism is pushing back, advocating for accessible information, safe procedures, and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
