Summary

Over 200 million women and girls worldwide are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM), a serious violation of their human rights that is expected to increase to 68 million by the year 2030. FGM still occurs despite the lack of any health benefits, especially in Nigeria, where it is deeply ingrained into cultural and ritual contexts. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015 is one piece of legislation the Nigerian government has passed to combat FGM. However, enforcement is still patchy, and cultural norms support the practice. Research indicates that women's empowerment is inversely related to their intention to subject their daughters to FGM, highlighting the significance of empowerment in challenging this tradition. The African Women's Empowerment Index (AWEI) assesses empowerment in a variety of areas, including attitudes toward violence, employment participation, educational attainment, and access to healthcare.
