CAN POLARIZATION HELP BRAZILIAN DEMOCRACY?

Author: Amanda Victória

The 2022 elections in Brazil were very important in deciding the country's direction between 2023 and 2027 and beyond, for the entire future. This is because for the first time in the democratic period, Brazil's political situation was extremely polarized between an extreme right-wing project, represented by the then President Bolsonaro, and the left, led by the former president and candidate for the third term Luís Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, who had been president of the country for almost 4 years and before that was a deputy for more than 28 years, was elected with the speech of “ending the petralhada”, a pejorative term he used against the opposition. Lula, in turn, was the candidate who had been arrested and seen by many as corrupt, even though his judicial process was annulled by the Supreme Court. In the end, Lula won the elections and as president he has the difficult mission of moving Brazil forward.
