SUMMARY

In the last two years, São Tomé and Príncipe has registered an increase in the consumption of so-called “soft drugs”, mainly among adolescents and young people. Domestic violence and theft are some of the behaviors associated with drug use in this group of islands, located off the coasts of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria. The most recent case, which shocked Sao Tome society, was the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in the Diogo Vaz farm. According to the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC), a 30-year-old man known as Nandinho confessed to the crime and admitted that he was drunk and under the influence of marijuana.

Currently, the most consumed drug in São Tomé and Príncipe is cannabis, also known as liamba or marijuana, said Yvete Lima: “It is considered a light drug, but for our reality I do not consider it light”. She emphasized that the country is not technically prepared to deal with these problems because in the current situation, there is already a need to have a detoxification center.
