Confronting the Paralysis of Fear: Is There a Way Out?
Authors: Mariam Khamidova
SUMMARY
Fear exerts a paralysing grip on societies, particularly under authoritarian regimes, impeding progress and stifling individual agency. By silencing dissent through censorship and punitive measures, fostering distrust and isolation, and normalising anxiety, fear curtails freedom of expression, fragments communities, and halts collective action. The pervasive atmosphere of apprehension erodes ambition, inhibits innovation, and ingrains dependence on authority, perpetuating a cycle of control and stagnation. As fear becomes ingrained, societal cohesion deteriorates, ultimately rendering societies immobilized and constrained by the weight of oppressive regimes.
