The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and tries individuals charged with human rights abuses, genocide, aggression, and war crimes. It was created in 1998 by an international Treaty named Rome Statute, but only started its mandate in 2002, and plays the role of being a complement to national courts. Before its creation, one only had ad hoc tribunals set by the United Nations Security Council, so it was an important moment for human rights and for transitional justice. However, even though countries accepted to be part of ICC, one still has a lot of cases in which they just do not cooperate with the court.
