SUMMARY
Instead of taking decisive action to stop widespread human rights violations in Darfur, the Sudanese government tries to silence those who speak out about the abuses.
Freedom of expression has been particularly absent from political debates between the Sudanese government and the United Nations or other interlocutors. Freedom of expression is fundamental, not only because it is a right in itself, but also because it acts in defense of other rights. Unless people are allowed to speak freely, it will be difficult for UN and African Union monitors to accurately assess progress in Darfu.
