Summary
Sub-Saharan Africa leads the global HIV epidemic by accounting for 67% of the 38.4 million individuals impacted by the virus in 2021. Additionally, numerous countries in the region suffer from armed conflicts, posing a threat to HIV management. These conflicts affect healthcare systems and medical resources, leading to limited access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Interruptions in treatment have negative impact for the patients, as it can potentially lead to drug resistance. This article aims to highlight the various barriers armed conflicts create, in the context of HIV treatment, and subsequently presents divers solutions to ensure the fundamental rights of affected patients.
