Human Rights in Question After the Coup in Niger?

On July 26th, 2023, soldiers detained Niger’s president, Mohamed Bazoum. This is the most recent coup d’état of many in Western and Central Africa. Immediate human rights issues are in question, such as the safety of the president and government officials. Additionally, the rights of protestors were violated when the military suppressed protests that called for Bazoum’s reinstatement. Longer term human rights violations are of concern as well, such as the well-being of citizens in an increasingly unstable governmental situation.
