HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND MIGRANT SMUGGLING

Author: Andressa Regis Melquiades Queiroz

Trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling, although distinct concepts, intertwine in the present day. The vulnerability of migrants makes them targets for criminal networks, who recruit them for exploitation. Many are lured by these networks with false promises of jobs and improved lives, only to find themselves subjected to various forms of exploitation, such as sexual and labor exploitation. Confiscation of passports and visas, along with threats related to the migrants' irregular status or the well-being of their families, serve as coercion tactics by the networks to discourage reporting and keep them trapped in their situation. Understanding the issue and recognizing the warning signs for identifying cases are crucial in combating this problem.
