In Pakistan: Justice delayed is justice denied

A long legal fight, Zaitoon Bibi, a resident of Dera Ismail Khan (DIK), after 46 years got the inheritance right from her father’s property, sources reported. In 1976, the brothers of Zaitoon Bibi occupied her share of the property. Zaitoon Bibi's brother moved the Supreme Court against the decision of the high court in 2018.

According to details, the Supreme Court ordered in favor of Zaitoon Bibi and recognized her share in his father’s property after 46 years and dismissed the brothers’ appeal against the High Court’s decision.

It is pertinent to note that Zaitoon Bibi had been filed the case in Civil Court in 2005 against his brothers for occupying her inheritance right in father’s property.

In 2012 the session court and in 2017, the Peshawar High Court recognized her share in her father's property and gave verdict in favour of Zaiton Bibi against the brothers. Salute to brave #ZaitoonBibi, for fighting a protracted legal battle for 46 years to get her rightful share of inheritance from her father’s property vs her brothers who fought first Peshawar HC to deny her this right, then took it to the SCP in appeal against PHC’s verdict.

The verdict of Supreme Court is hailed by people of different sectors and called it a welcomed development given that many women in Pakistan are denied their rightful share in inheritance, despite the law saying otherwise. This case from Dera Ismail Khan should be a ray of hope for women to fight for due rights.
