Author: Leyla Muradova

Country: Azerbaijan

Source: Law Day 2022: Uneven but Relentless Progress

SUMMARY

The article emphasizes the idea of equal legal protection as well as the ongoing problems with the justice system, especially its tendency to favor the privileged. Gender inequality exacerbates these problems by preventing women from accessing the justice system through covert barriers and discriminatory laws. It highlights the lack of adequate victim representation by citing examples such as low rape conviction rates and the reiteration of gender-based violence myths during trials. The author calls for a thorough, proactive approach from the legal community and judiciary to address ingrained inequalities and help create a more equitable society while highlighting the slow process of legal amendments to combat societal attitudes and structural biases.
