Author: Lerato Lekaota

Country: Lesotho

Source: Government of Lesotho

Summary

Lesotho, a small country of about 2.1 million population in the belly of Africa, has experienced a series of political crises and instability since independence. The current crisis emerged following the first coalition government in 2012. Scholars assign the prevailing political instability to the current Constitution adopted in 1993 which they argue is the prototype of the former colonizer-Britain. Several defects have been depicted in the Constitution, of profound interest to the paper is the power invested in the Prime Minister which has compromised effective checks and balances, independence of the judiciary, appointment of civil servants, and many others.

The prevailing political crisis called for a need to embark on constitutional, security, and government reforms. However, implementation of the reforms has not seen the light of the day from 2012 till date, raising concern over the extent to which public opinion matters in a democratic country like Lesotho.
