LOSS AND DAMAGE FUND AND THE URGENCY OF INTERNATIONAL AID FOR AFRICA'S CLIMATE IMPACTS

Author: Mio Yoshikawa

Africa produces between 3% and 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, yet the effects of climate change are disproportionately severe on the continent. The paradox is that while making such minimal contributions to the crisis, African nations are the ones most susceptible to its repercussions.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) findings suggesting African countries may need to invest up to 5 times more money for climate adaptation than for healthcare serve as an example of this susceptibility. G20 nations, which account for roughly 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions, face less imminent dangers.

At COP26, developed countries committed to giving developing nations $100 billion annually to help them mitigate and adapt to climate change. The fund, however, will not reach the US$100 billion allocated to developing nations in 2020 by at least US$17 billion.
