SUMMARY
Malaria is a deadly disease that affects much of Africa. Although the disease is transmitted by mosquito bites, it is the Plasmodium parasite itself that causes the disease in humans. Despite widespread and global efforts to reduce malaria rates, current interventions have been unable to efficiently reduce the prevalence of the disease. Sadly, children under the age of five make up most the cases and deaths. However, the approval of the first-ever malaria vaccine brings hope for children. Starting in the coming months, 18 million doses of the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine will be delivered to twelve African countries. The rollout of this vaccine will save many lives and is a monumental step on the path to eradicating malaria.
