Niger’s Evolving Coup and Why the West Seems to Care More

On the 26th of July, the president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was overthrown by the military Junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani. Took control of the country. This coup is part of a growing trend of toppled governments on the African continent. In the past couple of years, there have been several coups in other countries, such as Burkina Faso, Gambia, Sudan, and a number of other countries. Niger is just the latest to happen. However, the attention this has garnered in the West is notable. There are numerous reasons for this, some being Niger has been a vital partner in anti-terrorism operations in West Africa, and the infamous Wagner PMC. has become involved on the side of the military junta. There are several other reasons that we will go into in this article. Still, the fall of democracy in Niger is destabilizing for the entire region. With the recent declaration by ECOWAS of their possible intentions to intervene to restore democracy, there is a genuine chance that this coup could lead to chaos in West Africa.
