Wildfires may become an increasing concern with more hot and dry conditions expected under climate change. Increasing wildfire impacts may particularly affect Indigenous peoples and communities of Canada. The current wildfire season may be viewed as the worst within Canadian history, which has had particularly devastating consequences for Indigenous communities including causing their displacement, destruction of homes and forests, and loss of the ability to carry out traditional ways of life like hunting or fishing. Wildfire evacuations may be particularly difficult in remote communities. The fires can also impact future generations, such as the ability for plants to regenerate in the affected areas. Indigenous communities may be particularly susceptible to experiencing the impacts of fires because they are often left out of decision-making processes about fire responses or forest management. Nevertheless, Indigenous peoples and communities may be important for aiding in efforts to reduce the risk of growing impacts of fires in the future under climate change.
