Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Located on the southeastern coast of Brazil, the city has enviable characteristics that make it one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the country, such as its exuberant natural beauty, its mild and inviting tropical climate, and its population that is receptive to tourism. It doesn't seem like the same reality and place when looking at Rio de Janeiro as one of the most violent cities in the world, with extremely high rates of criminality and violent crimes against its population. Why is there such a huge discrepancy between beauty and safety? What makes this wonderful little town harbor so much violence? How can the Brazilian State fail so much in this place? Looking closer, you realize how violence has skin color and no minimally reasonable explanation for this reality. This article invites you to this reflection.
