On February 24th, 2022, the world was shocked when news broke out of war in Europe after months of troops concentration on the border with Ukraine and warnings from the United States. Russia had begun what is now a 500-plus-day war of conquest. People worldwide were shocked that a war of this scale could still happen in the twenty-first century and on the European continent. This war has revealed how crucial many things that Ukraine and Russia produce—namely cereal exports which include grain. Russia and Ukraine combined account for nearly 20% of the world's cereal exports. Most of these supplies head for North Africa and the Middle East. Until July 17th, a shakey grain deal has been in place between the two countries, allowing both to export their grain without sanctions in the name of food security. On July 17th, Russia pulled out of the deal, which could spell disaster for global food security.
