SUMMARY
Female genital mutilation occurs when a woman’s genitalia is altered for un-medically necessary reasons, which are usually cultural or religious. It is practiced in many countries around the world but is slowly being phased out as the practice impedes on children and women’s rights and causes a variety of immediate and long-term consequences. These consequences are both physical and physiological. Various organizations are working with communities and governments to put an end to female genital mutilation through education and advocacy, however there is a long road ahead before this primitive act no longer persists and causes harm.
