The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is one of two continental bodies charged with protecting human rights in Africa and interpreting the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter). Its counterpart, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, has a more expansive mandate. This article will give an overview of the court and its jurisdiction, then it will discuss the positive results achieved by the AfCHPR and the challenges it faces, particularly the implementation of the court’s rulings.
