Among Japanese immigrants to Canada, a disproportionate number are women. This trend may be connected to concerns associated with gender inequality in Japanese society. In Japan, women may be expected based on their gender to take on household responsibilities and to take care of children, which can prevent them from taking on job opportunities or to advance in the workplace. Considering the dominance of men in Japanese society and gender inequality, this may help to explain the attempt for many Japanese women to migrate to Canada. However, these women may still experience difficulties once arriving in Canada, including limitations in available job opportunities. Japanese women may also migrate to Canada due to viewing the Japanese culture as being restrictive, especially for women, such as requiring women to conform rather than leaving room for individualism. Overall, this trend may present concerns for Japan such as in terms of affecting the nation’s population growth rate.
