Globally, climate change is a major concern caused due to greenhouse gas emissions from using fossil fuels in various human activities, such as the transportation sector. To potentially address the climate change issue, the usage of hydrogen may be promoted, as it may support reduced emissions compared to fossil fuels. However, it is crucial to consider the potential different environmental impacts depending on the type of hydrogen used. Particularly, green hydrogen may be important for attaining greater environmental benefits by using renewable energy sources, compared to hydrogen produced from fossil fuels. Recently, a demonstration of the first hydrogen-powered train within North America was begun, to emphasize the potential importance of this technology in the heavy transportation sector in North America. Nonetheless, it is important for discussions of the potential promise of green hydrogen to address not only the benefits (such as for supporting reduced emissions and sustainable energy sources), but to also account for possible limitations or drawbacks of this technology, such as reduced efficiency compared to direct renewable energy usage. In spite of these possible limitations, green hydrogen may still have particular potential future uses that will be further examined.
