The transportation sector is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change, from traditional vehicles commonly relying upon fossil fuels to power them. As part of plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent climate change, electric vehicles may be a key development for transportation. As a result, various governments in different nations may attempt to support the development and use of electric vehicles through development of certain laws and policies. For example, in Canada, the federal government may implement certain regulations to require a certain proportion of new vehicles be zero-emissions vehicles such as electric vehicles, which can support electric vehicle production and use. While electric vehicles may be commonly linked to environmental benefits including emissions reductions, it is important to account for other potential benefits and drawbacks of electric vehicles for both the environment and human societies.
