A person’s overall health is key to their quality of life and ability to carry out daily activities and functions. However, in discussions on global health, there tends to be a focus on physical health, neglecting other health forms such as mental health. Individuals experiencing mental illness are often stigmatized in society, and can face barriers in job opportunities as well as in access to mental health services due to various reasons, including high costs of these services. While recent discussions of mental health often focus on “developed” nations, mental illnesses can impact individuals in “developing” nations as well. In fact, a large proportion of the global mental disorder burden occurs within low-income and middle-income nations. Nonetheless, there are global health inequities in access to mental health services, including individuals with mental illnesses who are from low-income groups and developing nations often experiencing greater difficulty in attaining access to these critical services.
