Housing can be important for each person’s health and well-being, and complete participation in communities. Nonetheless, many individuals and nations (often those who are most marginalized within society) may experience difficulties regarding housing availability and affordability, including in Toronto, Canada. During the housing crisis in Toronto, refugees may be especially vulnerable. Due to increasing concerns over housing affordability in this city likely contributing to the “overcrowding” situation in the Toronto shelter system, this shelter system has been closed to refugees. Consequently, many refugees recently had to live on the streets. The governments have been criticized for their slow response to this increasing issue, due to arguments over who should provide funding to address the situation. To respond to these criticisms, the federal government of Canada recently decided to provide funding to address the housing crisis for refugees in Toronto, although there are concerns over whether this may not provide long-term solutions to address the housing crisis, particularly to support those who are most vulnerable or marginalized including refugees.
