SUMMARY
Torture is evident in Africa in different situations, in police stations, on the street, in homes and in conflict zones. Anyone can be a victim of it, whether criminal suspects, innocent bystanders, political activists, human rights defenders, women and children. No one, regardless of their identity and where they are, should be subjected to such an act of inhumanity."
Although police officers are responsible for enforcing the law, in most cases they are the main torturers. Police brutality is a common practice throughout the African region. People in custody have died as a result of torture in many countries, from Cameroon to Equatorial Guinea.
