There are several factors that cause, in a society, the marginalization of part of its population, especially the poorest. The absence of conditions for a dignified life in every sense is, in essence, a terrible violation of human rights. In Brazil's largest city, São Paulo, where I took the cover photo for this article, cruelty against homeless people knows no bounds. The city, which is also the richest in the country and the “capital of opportunity” for improving life, has also been, in recent years, the site of discrimination by the government against people who need it most. Instead of acting on the front lines in the fight against hunger and poverty, the government of São Paulo has been more concerned with promoting a “hygienist policy” of the large centers, acting only to expel poverty from its field of vision. As a result, the city alone is home to almost half of the homeless population in all of Brazil and this absurd number keeps growing. Who cares about this problem that nobody sees?
