Unpacking the Niger Coup: Origins and Global Engagement

President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the military as part of the Niger coup, which resulted in a power vacuum and a threat to regional stability. Bazoum's release was promptly sought by ECOWAS, opening the door for international engagement. Following diplomatic talks, the US began activities in Niger after the coup, concentrating on data and observation. Although the military of Niger urged them to leave, France, a longtime associate, maintained its forces in place. These incidents highlight the precarious balance between foreign intervention and its impact on the post-coup situation in Niger.
