SUMMERY
Violence against women and honor crimes in Iran encompass various forms of abuse, predominantly inflicted by men on women. In Iran, this violence includes domestic abuse, rape, and murder, all driven sole- ly by the victim's gender and rooted in deep-seated gender inequalities. The concept of "honor" is a driving force, leading to men controlling women's social and sexual behavior, often based on subjective judgments. Honor crimes, the most severe form, contribute significantly to family murders, exacerbated by Iran's Sharia-based legal system. Iran ranks high globally in gender-based violence, with government adherence to Sharia sometimes leading to retribution against women defending themselves.
