Infant mortality refers to the deaths of children under the age of one year.
The Central African Republic has among the worst maternal, infant and neonatal mortality rates in the world. For every 100,000 live births, more than 890 women lose their lives, making it the second country with the highest maternal mortality rate. This rate is more than twice the average rate in Africa (439). CAR is also considered the second riskiest birthplace in the world. Most of these complications appear during pregnancy or childbirth and could be avoided or treated. With the aim of reducing maternal mortality over the long term, the capacities of midwives and midwifery assistants from three health regions of the country will be strengthened, through a month of training in the maternity ward of Boda hospital.
