SUMMARY Humanitarian and development nutrition is characterised by a long-lasting tension between social and medicalised approaches. While the former considers the political component of malnutrition, medicalised perspectives view it as an issue to be tackled through technical and scientific methods. Looking at the evolution of nutrition interventions, it becomes clear how the field has been shaped by contemporary understandings and interests.
