SUMMARY

Freedom of expression is the right to express one's opinions and ideas without fear of censorship or reprisal. It is a fundamental human right that is enshrined in international law. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

Despite the legal guarantees of freedom of expression, it is denied to millions of people around the world. There are many reasons why people are denied freedom of expression, including government censorship, social pressure, and violence.
