Uganda is experiencing a high rate of urbanisation exceeding 5% per annum. This is attributed to the high rural urban migration rate, the high natural population growth in urban areas, extension of the boundaries of urban centres and uncontrolled growth and expansion of trading centres over time. The growth of slums has become a natural indicator of the process of the country’s urbanisation. It is essential that at least 60 percent of the urban population lives in slums.
