Why do girls have reduced and unequal access to education in the Central African Republic?

Updated: Oct 24, 2023

Country: Central African Republic

In the Central African Republic, 22% of girls of school age are out of school and those who are in school drop out later. After the primary cycle, girls experience more possibilities of school breaks than boys even before entering the secondary cycle. They drop out of school to devote themselves to household or agricultural work in order to provide additional income for their family after forced or voluntary early marriages. Others are forced to engage in prostitution to survive.
