Summary
Sierra Leone is facing a grave maternal mortality crisis. Although the crisis has been improving, the country’s healthcare system lacks the necessities to provide complete and proper maternal care, resulting in preventable deaths. The root causes include understaffing of medical professionals, limited access to healthcare facilities, and a lack of reproductive and sexual health education, particularly among teenagers. Addressing these challenges through increased staffing, better healthcare accessibility, and comprehensive education is crucial to stopping thousands of preventable deaths and improving maternal health in Sierra Leone.
