Why the steady rise of drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe

Authors: Day Mungani , Jim Tamuro

There is growing concern in Zimbabwe about the sharp rise in drug and substance abuse. Many of the youths of the younger generation are involved in drug and substance abuse and this has reached calamitous levels.

Substances and drugs like mutoriro, musombodhiya, halogen bulbs, marijuana, mudzepete, cranco and others are locally produced to satisfy the youths. These drugs are highly toxic and have mental health issues. If continuously used unabated, drugs use is associated with criminal activities.

Many educational institutions in Zimbabwe have seen a gradual increase of drunk students or pupils often performing unheard of acts. Being controlled by drugs in not something that is new but it dates back to the 1980s and it first came popular in the urban areas. In addition to that, being drunk is usually associated with such behaviors that are rare to society. In Zimbabwe, being in that ecstatic state because of drugs is locally called kusticker.

It is the popular name for those who have attained the maximum level of being obsessed and controlled by drugs. Drug and substance abuse has led to poor pass rates in schools and a rise in crime in the society.
