Summary
Even with the presence of anti-discrimination laws in the Indian constitution, discrimination still persists in the country, primarily due to deeply ingrained cultural norms. Caste, gender, and religious background continue to play a role in treating individuals differently and denying them equal opportunities. For instance, women face employment discrimination, often being paid less than men despite having similar qualifications and performing the same tasks. Moreover, historically marginalized communities such as the Dalits along with religious minorities like Muslims, continue to face unequal access to jobs, livelihoods, and financial support. Consequently, these individuals and groups find themselves trapped in extreme poverty, unable to meet their basic needs. Furthermore, discrimination gives rise to social inequalities, hampers economic progress, and undermines the principles of justice and equality.
